It was very warm as I made my way in this morning. It was five days since I last visited this roost site. I hoped to find some hens this time. But when I reached the giant white oak where they like to roost, it was empty again! I still had some time, so I looped around to another field to check some of the nearby trees they sometimes roost in. Wouldn't you know, I found a single turkey in that same tree as the last one five days ago! It was a longbeard again too! I couldn't find any other birds roosted with him. So I just set up within twenty five yards of him & got ready. It started to break daylight & he began gobbling, along with one other bird off in the distance. Those were the only birds I heard gobbling. Then just before flydown, I heard a hen back in a little farther! He gobbled at her & so did the other bird. She sounded like an older hen too! She began to get more & more excited with her yelping & even did some cutting, which he ate up! Pretty soon, I heard wingbeats & even saw a couple other birds pitch down! Eventually, five hens walked into the field! They began to pick around & feed away from the longbeard I was sitting under. But he just stayed in the tree gobbling & looking around! To be honest, I almost think he saw me sitting there & didn't know what I was. But it made him nervous enough to pitch away from the hens. After the hens fed out of sight, I snuck out of there. A little disappointing to not get any hen footage, but at least I was able to crawl under a longbeard & watch how he reacted to some calling. So it was a great morning!
