I decided to try one of my most dependable roost sites this morning. The last time I was in there was April fourth & there was only six birds roosted there (one longbeard & the rest were jakes...no hens). I knew going in that this would probably be my last roost visit. The Ohio youth hunt on Saturday will kick off my 2015 hunting season. So I hoped for one more good morning of video! As I walked in, I noticed that it was beginning to green up for the first time since early March. When I reached the ridgetop & searched the treetops with my binoculars, I couldn't see any turkeys. So I pushed on & hoped that once I got closer, I would see them. But that wasn't the case. I couldn't find a turkey anywhere! I zig-zagged as quickly & as quietly as I could searching all the normal roost trees, but came up empty! There wasn't a single turkey (that I could see) roosting in there! I was actually shocked because in three years of filming this roost site, that was a first. So just to be sure, I decided to just sit down & listen at daylight. I thought maybe they roosted across the hollow or something. But once it started to break, I didn't hear a peep!...anywhere! I stuck around for a half hour after sunrise & still never heard any type of turkey noise whatsoever. I tried to make sense of it as I packed up my gear & headed out of the woods. I noticed there was some recent turkey sign in the form of wing feathers & droppings that I know wasn't there 12 days ago. But it was an empty roost today! (& quiet everywhere within earshot as well).
