Quiet morning in southeast Ohio
Went in blind this morning to a traditional roost site high on a steep, hardwood ridge. When I got close to the roost trees, I couldn't find any turkeys. I looked & looked, but just couldn't put an eyeball on any birds. It was 5:30 when I arrived at the roost site, but didn't have time to try & head to another spot. So I just sat down @ the base of a tree & took a nap. When the birds began singing, I woke up & heard a hen yelp out the ridge from me! I listened intently & again heard it. This time, another bird! I could tell they were maybe 80-100 yards away. I was a little surprised because I had walked past them to get to where I was sitting! It was breaking daylight, so I couldn't get up & move any closer. A little while later, I heard one pitch down & then another. They didn't talk much at all on the limb & once they hit the ground, I heard maybe two series of yelps & that was it! After a while, I got up & looked under some of the roost trees I was sitting under & could see a bunch of roost sign! I guess I just picked the wrong day to be there. But with a little luck, maybe I can get on them tomorrow morning...
